tags (found designs)

I have been collecting graffiti tags, mostly local ones in the Ouseburn Valley, Newcastle.

Some resemble prototype designs for windmill turbines, others offer studies of wind energy, force, seeking equilibrium and power. The conceit is lighthearted, another mode of urban pastoral. Reflecting on the tag motifs, they do seem to express some essential human concern – not only the territorial urge to make-mark, but also a youthful obsession with elemental energy, the graphic representation of force and measure of our own precarious im/balance.

  1. Since the world was created by letters (see kabbalah) the world wants to be covered by letters (or glyphs, or signs). It wants to return to it's pristine state.
